Crede catches Gold Glove fever

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The campaign began last season when White Soxcatcher A.J. Pierzynski and manager Ozzie Guillen became pitchmen forthird baseman Joe Crede.

That campaign trail has carried on into this season.

"If Joe Crede doesn't get a Gold Glove this year, then somethingis seriously wrong," Pierzynski said last week.

But for Crede, it's first things first.

"I'd rather stick another World Series trophy in the case first, but I'm not going to say that I don't want to win a Gold Glove,"Crede said Saturday. "It's one of those things where the more peopletalk about it, the more you think about it."

Crede also knows that award has become political. Not only do youhave to be a frequent guest on ESPN's "Web Gems," but you better havedecent offensive numbers, as well. No third baseman made as manyplays as Crede did last season, but he also hit .252.

The 2005 American League winner -- Eric Chavez -- hit .269, buthad 27 home runs compared to Crede's 22.

"That fact right there tells you it's out of your hands," Credesaid. "You can have a great year on the defensive side and not win. There are pretty good number guys that could have won it last year, but Chavez won it and I think he deserved it."
