Fed: Chief steward comes clean on greyhound race fixing
The man at the centre of the greyhound racing industry corruption scandal yesterday
admitted accepting bribes from trainers to cover dog doping.
New South Wales Greyhound Racing Authority chief steward RODNEY POTTER told the Independent
Commission Against Corruption hearing into the industry he accepted money from trainers
to swap drug tests.
Mr POTTER said he was involved with top trainer RONALD GILL who paid him to obtain
a racing certificate to enable dog substitution and for ensuring all his dogs returned
negative drug tests.
Mr POTTER was paid 10 per cent of the prize money -- amounting to between $800 and
$1,000 each month -- over 18 months.
He's admitted to regularly tampering with drug samples before they reached the Australian
Racing Forensic Authority's laboratory.
Mr GILL has won all the state's top races including the $100,000 1994 National Derby
with Indian Dance.
He has refused to answer questions at the inquiry and may face contempt charges in
the Supreme Court.
The hearing before commissioner IRENE MOSS continues today.
